It depends on what your doctor is checking for. Abdominal ultrasounds evaluate organs like the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas; vascular studies (carotid, venous, arterial duplex) check blood flow; pelvic/transvaginal exams assess gynecological health; and echocardiograms image the heart. If you're not sure which scan you need, your referring provider's order will specify it — or call us and we can help match your symptoms to the right study.
Preparation varies by service. Abdominal and gallbladder scans typically require fasting for 8 hours beforehand. Pelvic and transvaginal exams often require a full bladder. Vascular studies usually need no prep at all. We'll give you specific instructions when you schedule.
If you're using insurance, yes — your provider will send an order specifying the study. If you're self-pay, no referral is required for most services; just let us know your symptoms or concerns and we'll recommend the appropriate scan.
Most diagnostic ultrasounds take between 20–45 minutes, depending on the study. Vascular duplex scans and echocardiograms tend to run on the longer end since they capture blood flow and cardiac motion in detail.
Every scan is reviewed by a radiologist, and your images are captured by a sonographer holding active ARDMS® certification.
